STREET CHILDREN SHELTER HOME (GHARTA)
The Street-Children Shelter provides a home for 100 street-children from around Pune. They come from all across the city and from a variety of backgrounds. They are not orphans. Their parents simply cannot take care of them (too poor, alcoholic, sex worker, etc). JPSDP counselors find the children and work with the families to offer the children a home at the shelter. At the shelter, the children are on a more structured schedule and attend a government school every day. They have regular health check-ups with a JPSDP doctor and receive three meals per day. The children are allowed to visit their parents. This shelter provides stability in the lives of children that have suffered frequently throughout their lives. It provides them with an equal opportunity to gain an education and take control over their lives.
